  In the U.S. “historical truth” is often muddled or suppressed in order to portray people in a better light. People are much more sensitive to the cultural conflicts that are part of celebrating Thanksgiving, yet many people do not know how to address them. In other words, people do not want to stop celebrating Thanksgiving; its message is ultimately one of sharing, thankfulness, and generosity. Yet, Thanksgiving´s history is shameful and bloody. Can you think of any ways that people might continue to celebrate Thanksgiving while honoring those whom it has greatly hurt?
• As the Thanksgiving celebration is a result of death and horror that American ancestors suffered, one way to remember them would be to design a special flag to represent them who died, which would be raised only on the Thanksgiving Day.
  In addition to this, another way to honor those whom were hurt could be singing a special song before the opening session of the traditional football game between the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys. This song must relate the real story and commemorate the memories of those tragic events.
  Another way could be that the whole country keeps silent for a minute at moon time n memory of those who died in the past.
  
  A similar case occurs in Colombia with the Cartagena´s Independence celebration, which is celebrated on 11th November. Taking into consideration that the independence was reached thanks of thousands of brave people, who gave their life to liberate one of the most important cities of my country, it is supposed that the whole country should commemorate this date and honor their memories. Nevertheless, since 1933, when the annual national female beauty contest was created, the independence event has lost importance. Most of people only care about the contestant, and they have forgotten the history of this holiday.
  In order to recover the importance and value of our history, it should be considered to perform and special act during the beauty contestant to honoring those whom made a sacrifice for our liberty.
  
• Also, can you think of instances in your own country´s history where the government has hidden or suppressed the truth about its actions? How did people find out, and what do people do now to work to ensure that it does not happen anymore, or at least not as much.
  
• One of the most scandal events in my country has been the phenomenon of “parapolictics”. For years my country (Colombia) has suffered because of the violent actions made of illegal groups or “guerrillas”, which have killed lots of people, including politics and reach people. Even though the national army has worked hardly to fight against these illegal groups, they have caused many deaths and kidnappings trying to domain the whole country. For this reason, some rich people, senators, and congressmen, who are supposed to have suffered the consequences from the “guerrillas” groups ‘actions, joined forces ad create an “alternative” army called “parapolitics” in order to protect themselves. In other words, some congressmen and other politicians were indicted for suspicions of colluding with other terrorist group called United Self Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC). However, because this group does not follow the law and they killed guerilla people, which are against our laws and the international right of life, it is illegal. When this phenomenon known as “parapolitics” was disclosed, some of the most prestigious government people and authorities such as the former Information Technologies Chief of the Administrative Department of Security (DAS) were related to dozens of murders, and try to justify their violent actions based on the fact that they were exposed to dangerous situations. However, their actions were also related with narcotraffick and mafias. At the beginning, politics related with these scandals tried to hide their actions and justify their incorrect methods. Nevertheless, it was eventually discovered as one of the accused senators confess the whole truth and reveal these relationships.
  Thus, nowadays the government and no governmental agencies perform deep researches and controls about “parapolitcs” infiltration, and try to finish with these illegal connections between the government and terrorist groups.

Moore´s movie and gun control

How has watching Moore´s movie changed your ideas about gun control and the causes of gun violence? Critics of Moore argue that he is merely a propagandist and that he doesn´t tell the "real" story. Others also critize his methods; for example, Moore often pretends to be a friend of someone he wants to interview and then humiliates that person (e.g. Charlton Heston). What do you think of Moore´s methods? Is the film successful? Why or why not?

* Watching the Moore´s movie gave me a wide point of view regard to who has the responsibility of the gun and violence control, and how the society tends to avoid facing this problematic situation.

First of all, media, music industry (singers like Marylin Manson, producers, etc.), and advertisement world, who blame government for provide a poor control on the gun commerce, are guilty for promoting violence and encouraging fears between audience in order to strength the market and increase their income.

On the other hand, family and schools blame media and commerce, but they should be aware of that they must play a more active role promoting values of respect of the life and human beings.
In contrast, the government always cares about obtain more power and money without pay attention of the consequences. Even though they claim that gun control should be increased; they do not adopt necessary measures to exert adequate control because they are receiving profits from that industry.
Moreover, they use guns and firearms during war times without any regret feeling or desire to protect and respect the human life.

To sum up, this movie has shown me that everybody is responsible of the current violence and death reality that we are living. Although everybody tries to blame each other, we all are part of the solution to stop this dramatic situation caused by use and commerce of gun control and violence.

Regarding to Moore´s methods, I think that sometimes he tries to seem like victim or friend so that obtain information to make the movie, which eventually increase his profits. It is possible that at the beginning, he had altruist purposes, but finally his last goal might have been collect a big amount of money.

Although his methods are not the most appropriate, I think they were effective and necessaries to acquire information. His movie was successful because he achieved his goal of show the reality of gun control, the loopholes in the actual regulation, and how all parts related to encourage the industry of arms blame each other without assume their own responsibility.

An interesting topic for the next Moore´s movie could be about “traffic of drugs”, which should show not only the production in countries like in Colombia, but also how the demand of countries like USA, encourages this illegal market. Furthermore, it should be included how this problem has affected poor people and how proposed methods by the governments are ineffective and unwise. In addition to that, it would be really important that the movie shows the positive things of countries like Colombia such as flora, fauna, kind people, trying to demonstrate that our country is not only violence, but it is life and joy.

Gun control USA

How do you think the issue of terrorism, both here and abroad, has made the issue of gun control more complex? Do you see any viable solutions to the problems?



After terrorist attacks and homicides cases such as VT massacre and September 11th, the gun control has become a complicated issue in the whole world because it has shown the existence of loopholes in the legal system of the United States. From this perspective, the necessity of correct and/or amend the U.S. law related with gun control is now obvious. However, those loopholes have existed for long time and have promoted the growth of the gun industry in the entire world, letting that homicides and suicides occur during the last years in other countries like Colombia, among others.

On the other hand, this industry has a great economical power that encourages its market expansion, making more difficult to stop or decrease their advancement.
